Molasses – A Valuable Raw Material for Industry and Animal Feed
Molasses is a by-product of sugar production from sugar cane or sugar beet. In the final step of its production, after the crystalized sugar has been centrifuged, a syrupy residue remains that contains over 50% sugar, but which cannot be crystallized any further.
The sugar content of molasses depends on various factors, including the quality of the raw materials, the climate and the technical equipment used by the sugar factories. On average, 25–35 kg of molasses are produced per ton of sugar beets and 45–50 kg per ton of sugarcane. The main component of molasses is sucrose, a natural disaccharide composed of glucose and fructose that plants produce as an energy reserve.
Molasses is a highly versatile raw material: it serves as a valuable energy source for animal feed, a prized flavor carrier in mixed rations, and a key component in the fermentation industry as well as in various other applications. Thanks to its composition, it is efficient, natural and versatile and, in high demand worldwide.
